Monrovia is located 20 miles northeast of Los Angeles at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains, part of the San Gabriel Valley, eight miles east of the City of Pasadena, in Los Angeles County. Monrovia was founded May 17, 1886 and incorporated in 1887. City Council/City Manager plan, adopted in 1923. Mayor is elected separately every two years; Council Members every four years. City Clerk and City Treasurer are also elected positions. Many varieties of single-family homes, condominium complexes and multi-family rental unite are found throughout Monrovia. Architectural styles range from vintage Victorian homes to modern designs.
Municipal Library, Monrovia Historical Museum, Historic Home Museum, Concerts in the Park, annual Monrovia Arts Festival, Monrovia Days Parade & SoapBox Classic, Family Festival, Fridays, March-December. 45 Churches. More than 140 developed acres of hiking and camping terrain, tennis courts, swimming pool & wading pools, Community Center, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club and an Aquatics Center.

Young residents of Monrovia are served by the Monrovia Unified School District. In total the school has twelve schools including an early learning center, five elementary schools, two middle schools, a comprehensive high school, a continuation high school, an alternative program and Independent Study program, a home study program, an opportunity program and a large adult education program. The District also includes portions of Arcadia and Duarte.
